Sometimes the stars align in the most serendipitous of ways. Nearly 3 years ago, I was not looking for a new opportunity. I was very satisfied with the career I had built over a decade at UCSF, one of the best universities for health sciences in the world. I was reaching my mid-40s, had become a full professor, and lived a comfortable suburban life. But, on occasion I did ask myself, 'What's next?' It wasn't exactly a mid-life crisis, more like a mid-life curiosity. Then, during a family vacation to Vietnam in 2022, my wife and I loved being in this environment so much that we wondered whether we could take a sabbatical for a year and just live in Vietnam with our young daughters. It was kind of a daydream, not a serious plan to put into action. It was a "what if?" moment. Then, as fate would have it, the day after that conversation between my wife and me, I happened to mention this daydream to a Vietnamese friend. He looked at me and said, 'you know there's this new university in Hanoi that could use someone with your background and skills. At the time his suggestion caused me to raise an eyebrow, and do a little research on this newcomer university. Fast forward just a few short months and I was already on the ground in my new role as Vice Dean for Medical Education at VinUniversity, and my children were enrolled in a brandnew international school nearby. Looking back, it's difficult not to believe in fate. It was meant to be that I would come back to Vietnam, after 40 years of being in the US, to lend my experience and energy toward an ambitious and breathtaking vision for Vietnamese higher education, one that brings together world-class scholars and the best students to campus. In the next 5 years, VinUni will grow exponentially, and I firmly believe that the stars will align equally for hundreds of other faculty who don't yet know that their fate will lead them to converge on this beautiful campus.
