POSITION OVERVIEW 

The Laboratory Technician at CMIT (Home - CMIT) is responsible for overseeing daily laboratory operations, managing research assets, and maintaining characterization equipment. This role acts as a crucial link between research teams, procurement, and facility administration to ensure seamless, safe, and efficient scientific work. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  1. Characterization Equipment Operation & Maintenance
  • Equipment Operation: Supervise, schedule, and operate advanced characterization equipment and analytical tools for research and testing activities. 
  • Maintenance & Repair: Perform routine checks, preventative maintenance, calibration, and basic troubleshooting/repairs for characterization instrumentation. 
  • Technical Support & Training: Assist researchers, faculty, and students with proper equipment handling, test sample preparation, and basic data acquisition. 
  • Vendor Coordination: Liaise with equipment suppliers and service engineers for complex repairs, technical upgrades, and annual service contracts. 
  1. Research Asset & Inventory Management
  • Asset Tracking: Maintain a clear, up-to-date registry of all research assets, lab instruments, specialized tools, and technical documentation. 
  • Usage Demands & Scheduling: Keep track of user demand, usage schedules, machine runtime logs, and facility capacity to optimize equipment utilization. 
  • Consumable & Material Tracking: Monitor stock levels of raw materials, chemical reagents, gases, and lab consumables required for daily research activities. 
  1. Procurement & Purchasing Support
  • Procurement Aggregation: Consolidate procurement requests and technical requirements for raw materials, consumables, spare parts, and new instruments from research teams. 
  • Vendor & Sourcing Management: Research vendors, obtain quotes, compare technical specifications, and prepare purchasing documentation. 
  • Receiving & Inspection: Support the delivery process by inspecting incoming materials/equipment for compliance with specifications and quality standards. 
  1. Operational Safety & Environment (EHS)
  • Safety Protocol Enforcement: Establish and enforce Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and local regulatory standards. 
  • Hazard & Risk Management: Oversee the safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological/industrial waste. 
  • Incident Reporting & Training: Promptly investigate and resolve operational safety issues, conduct regular safety orientations, and maintain emergency response readiness. 
  1. General Administration & Continuous Improvement
  • Keep the laboratory workspace organized, clean, and compliant with institutional standard practices. 
  • Prepare periodic reports on lab usage, asset condition, and budget expenditures for management. 
  • Perform additional lab-related duties as assigned by leadership. 

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA 

Education & Experience 

  • Degree: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline. 
  • Experience: Minimum 2–3 years of hands-on experience in research laboratory management, equipment maintenance, or characterization facility operations. 

Technical Skills 

  • Characterization Equipment: Hands-on familiarity with the operation and basic maintenance of analytical/characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis, TGA/DSC, etc.). 
  • Asset & Procurement Knowledge: Working knowledge of asset tracking systems, procurement processes, and inventory control techniques.
