ABOUT THE POSITION 

The Lab Management Officer provides frontline technical and operational support for VinUniversity's Research Complex Facility, working under the direction of the Research Infrastructure Manager. The role spans two connected domains: the physical laboratory environment (equipment, consumables, safety) and the research computing environment (HPC/GPU systems, storage, shared scientific platforms). The Officer ensures that researchers across the University's centres of excellence and key laboratories have reliable, safe, and well-supported access to the instruments and computational resources their work depends on.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES  

1. Laboratory equipment maintenance and operational readiness

  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and first-line troubleshooting of laboratory equipment
  • Keep all instruments and tools in working condition and ready for scheduled research activity
  • Coordinate repairs and technical support with vendors and service providers, and track resolution to closure

2. Technical support to researchers

  • Provide hands-on support for experimental setup and execution
  • Assist with sample preparation, testing procedures, and data collection
  • Train faculty, postdocs, and students on correct equipment operation and laboratory protocols

3. Laboratory inventory and safety compliance

  • Monitor and replenish consumables, reagents, and essential supplies to avoid disruption to research
  • Maintain accurate records of laboratory stock, usage, and equipment logs
  • Enforce safety protocols, chemical and biological waste disposal regulations, and hazard management procedures

4. Research computing infrastructure (HPC/GPU and storage)

  • Support the operation, maintenance, and upgrade of GPU/HPC clusters, storage systems, and shared research platforms
  • Administer resource allocation across research projects and monitor utilisation for fairness and efficiency
  • Monitor system performance, diagnose faults, and escalate or resolve technical issues

5. Computational user support

  • Assist researchers in optimising computational workflows, simulations, and job scheduling
  • Install, configure, and maintain specialised scientific and engineering software, including licence management
  • Deliver training and guidance on HPC/GPU usage and computing best practices

6. Cybersecurity and research data management

  • Implement cybersecurity measures protecting research data and computing infrastructure
  • Manage data storage, backup, and access-control policies
  • Ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory data security and data governance requirements

7. Procurement support

  • Identify and recommend upgrades and purchases for laboratory and IT infrastructure
  • Prepare technical specifications and coordinate with suppliers and the procurement team for cost-effective sourcing
  • Ensure timely acquisition of consumables, hardware, software licences, and maintenance contracts

8. Records and reporting

  • Maintain user logs, training and certification records, and compliance documentation
  • Provide periodic usage, downtime, and inventory data to the Research Infrastructure Manager for reporting

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA  

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physical sciences, life sciences, computer science, information technology, or a related discipline
  • At least 2–3 years of experience in laboratory operations, technical research support, or research computing/system administration
  • Working knowledge of laboratory equipment operation and maintenance, and of Linux-based computing environments
  • Demonstrated attention to safety standards, documentation, and record-keeping
  • Working proficiency in English and Vietnamese

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience supporting multi-user research facilities or shared core laboratories
  • Experience administering HPC/GPU clusters, job schedulers (e.g. Slurm), storage systems, or scientific software stacks
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety certification, chemical inventory systems, or research data management practices
  • Experience preparing technical specifications and coordinating vendor procurement
