Job Description

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Head of Student Development will report to the Vice Provost for Academic Administration and lead the Student Development function. This role is responsible for shaping a holistic student development ecosystem that empowers students to thrive academically, personally, socially, and professionally throughout their journey at VinUniversity.

The position oversees key areas including student engagement, leadership development, wellbeing, inclusion, student success, co-curricular learning, and campus experience. The Head of Student Development will play a central role in fostering student belonging, retention, growth, and overall student satisfaction through impactful developmental programs, meaningful student experiences, and integrated support services.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Development, Wellbeing, and Campus Life

  • Lead and oversee holistic student development initiatives that promote wellbeing, resilience, leadership, and personal growth.
  • Oversee all aspects of student residential life, including dormitories and housing operations, to foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging living-learning environment.
  • Manage the operation and scheduling of sports, recreation, and wellness facilities to support healthy lifestyles and community engagement.
  • Design and implement mental health initiatives, counseling support, peer-support programs, and wellbeing campaigns.
  • Coordinate crisis intervention, wellbeing workshops, and preventive support initiatives.
  • Partner with academic and administrative units to cultivate a culture of holistic student wellness and care.

Student Leadership, Engagement, and Campus Involvement

  • Foster a vibrant student life ecosystem through student-led activities, leadership opportunities, and co-curricular engagement.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the Student Council and officially recognized student clubs and societies.
  • Support and advise student organizations in event planning, governance, budgeting, logistics, and risk management.
  • Develop leadership training, student ambassador programs, and capacity-building initiatives for student leaders.
  • Facilitate fair, transparent, and developmental club recognition and funding processes.
  • Promote meaningful student participation, community engagement, and campus traditions.

Student Success and Development Programs

  • Lead institutional student success initiatives that support retention, progression, engagement, and overall student achievement.
  • Coordinate and deliver first-year transition and orientation programs through OASIS to ensure successful onboarding and integration of new students.
  • Oversee the implementation of advising frameworks, early alert systems, and targeted interventions for at-risk students.
  • Coordinate the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program and other peer-learning initiatives.
  • Track and support students’ Individual Development Plans (IDP) across academic years to encourage intentional growth and career readiness.
  • Manage the Co-curricular & Competency Transcript (CCT) platform to document, validate, and showcase students’ experiential learning and developmental achievements beyond the classroom.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging

  • Design and lead programs that promote diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging across the student community.
  • Collaborate with academic and administrative partners to build an inclusive, respectful, and globally minded campus culture.
  • Support initiatives that strengthen intercultural understanding, student voice, and community connectedness.

International Student Development and Experience

  • Lead onboarding, orientation, transition, and ongoing support initiatives for international students.
  • Coordinate visa-related support services, cultural exchange activities, and international student advocacy efforts.
  • Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment that supports international student success and integration.

Student Services and Experience

  • Oversee both virtual and physical student service touchpoints to ensure responsive, student-centered support.
  • Enhance the overall student experience through service excellence, streamlined processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Manage operations of the campus merchandise store (online and offline) as part of student engagement and campus identity building.
  • Monitor student feedback, satisfaction indicators, and service analytics to inform strategic improvements.

Student Digital Experience and Engagement Platforms

  • Oversee student-facing digital platforms, including the MyVinUni mobile app, student portal, and related digital engagement channels.
  • Ensure content quality, usability, accessibility, responsiveness, and continuous enhancement of the student digital experience.
  • Utilize analytics, feedback, and student insights to improve engagement and service effectiveness.

Student Conduct, Recognition, and Accountability

  • Administer non-academic awards, recognition programs, and student achievement celebrations.
  • Coordinate student conduct and disciplinary processes in alignment with university policies and community standards.
  • Promote responsible citizenship, integrity, and leadership within the student community.

Work-Study and Experiential Development

  • Oversee the student work-study program, including recruitment, placement, supervision coordination, and developmental outcomes.
  • Develop operational guidelines, monitor student performance, and ensure meaningful experiential learning opportunities.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to align work-study experiences with student growth and employability objectives.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Graduate degree in a relevant academic discipline. Candidates with doctoral degrees and established academic records may be considered for a concurrent faculty appointment within the University.
  • Demonstrated experience with student affairs, university life, and administration.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in higher education, ideally in student affairs.
  • Proven skills in student development, planning, budgeting, and team management.
  • Ability to navigate challenges typical of a new university with patience, resilience, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Strong commitment to and experience with inter-professional education at undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels.
