ABOUT THE POSITION
The Institute of 3D Technology in Medicine (VI3D) is being established at VinUniversity on the foundation of the VinUni 3D Technology in Medicine Center (3D Lab), working closely with Vinmec Healthcare System. Since 2022 the 3D Lab has delivered more than 1,300 personalized cases for 18 hospitals, including patient-specific surgical instruments, anatomical models, cranial implant molds and customized titanium implants, under a quality management system certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 13485. 3D technology in medicine is listed among Vietnam's national strategic technologies, and VI3D is set to deliver national strategic technology tasks on personalized 3D-printed medical devices under the Ministry of Health for 2026–2030, spanning design, polymer and metal additive manufacturing, clinical trials, national standards and commercialization.
Reporting to the Head of Personalized 3D Design, the Engineer turns CT and MRI data into patient-specific products, working directly with surgeons on each case: patient-specific instruments (PSI), anatomical and simulation models and other polymer products, and personalized titanium implants. Engineers are assigned to the polymer or metal stream according to case load and expertise. The Department has two (2) positions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Segmentation: Segment CT and MRI data and reconstruct the anatomy and pathology relevant to each case.
- Surgical planning: Plan procedures with surgeons, such as arthroplasty alignment, osteotomy correction and tumour resection margins.
- Polymer products: Design cutting and drilling guides, anatomical and pathology models (multi-colour and multi-material), simulation models for training, and cranial implant molds for intraoperative cranioplasty.
- Metal implants: Design personalized titanium implants: anatomical fit, fixation and screw trajectories, and lattice or porous structures for osseointegration and weight reduction.
- Design for manufacturing: Prepare designs for the target process (vat photopolymerization, material jetting, polymer or metal powder bed fusion): orientation, supports, minimum wall thickness and powder removal; hand over print-ready files to the polymer or metal lab.
- Design review and records: Iterate the design with surgeons until design freeze; record approvals, versions and the design record of each case.
- Verification: Provide models and load cases to the simulation team for finite element verification of load-bearing implants.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- At least one (1) year of experience in CAD or medical 3D design; experience designing for metal additive manufacturing is an advantage.
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Materialise Mimics and 3-matic; orthopaedic planning software such as mediCAD is an advantage; SolidWorks or Fusion 360; lattice design tools are an advantage.
- Engineering drawing and tolerancing; solid knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy.
- Understanding of the constraints of polymer and metal additive manufacturing processes and of biocompatible materials for surgical guides.
- Disciplined record keeping under ISO 13485; working English.
- Alignment with VinUni’s core values (EXCEL): Empathy, Exceptional Capability, Creativity, Entrepreneurial Spirit, and Leadership Mindset
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
